I would contact your son’s doctor and see what specialists he recommends. I know in my state if you start early enough he may be able to receive services from your town. Good Luck
My nephew was late on speaking and he was very frustrated too, my sister did get advice from the doctor to contact the child study team through her town – the town did offer a speech therapist and when he turned 3 or 4 he entered the town’s special pre-school and now at 5 he’s in a transitional kindergarten through the town and should be able to enter 1st grade next year w/ no problem. The services he has gotten are great, he’s progressed so much from banging his head in frustration to already trying to read in kindergarten.

My brother didn’t say much until he was about 4 1/2 years old. He did have a speech problem where he couldn’t pronounce words in a way that we could understand him, so he would get frustrated and just throw a tantrum instead of talking. He went to speech classes for about 6 months to a year so he could start kindergarten. He’s 22 now and won’t shut up! haha. So, even if your son says very little now, he will learn soon and most likely be fine when he’s older. I would see a therapist though just to be sure.

Definitely seek a doctor and specialist regarding this issue.
Another suggestion is to take him to have his ears checked. My nephew who is almost 4 was having speech problems and therapy was not helping him. Somebody finally suggested having his ears checked because he didn’t seem to look at people a lot when they spoke, like he wasn’t hearing them. Sure enough, from ear infections as a baby he had a ton of fluid and build up in his ears. The doctor said it was amazing that he could even hear anything. That was the problem. He couldn’t hear and therefore couldn’t even learn language skills and sounds.
He’s been on antibiotics about 2 months now and it’s like night and day, his speech has more than tripled already, so check that out as an option too.
Best wishes for your little guy. Don’t be afraid to get multiple opinions as well!

You don’t need to pay for an evaluation privately.
In the US, children with speech delay are covered by the school system, even kids as young as your son. Contact the neighborhood elementary school and request a speech and language evaluation, in writing. They have 30 days to schedule one.
It’s very clear he is delayed, so don’t wait.

The above answer is correct – the public school system has an early intervention program that evaluates and provides services for these things. The evaluation should include language, motor skills, social skills, an appointment with an audiologist, and then they will discuss the findings and you’ll have a meeting to discuss services.
There are a variety of reasons your son may not be talking and it’s impossible to even speculate without knowing more about him. I would contact your pediatricians office to see who to contact within the Early Intervention Program in your state because sometimes it is set up through the public schools and sometimes it is done through a local social services office.

I have 3 sons all speech delayed and they have gone through (my 8 yr old), are going through (my 3 yr old) and will go through (2 yr old getting services at Easter Seals) the developmentally delayed preschool where speech therapy is provided in a preschool setting for 3-5 yr olds with other identified children for free. I can’t say enough about the program.
EI-early intervention is the program that comes before this or 0-3. Since he isn’t 3, call them, they will get him in and started 1:1 and then in the fall he can go to the preschool. All of my kids have gone through this too.

I would contact your local elementary school and ask for a speech eval. He definately needs speech therapy BAD. It is very disturbing to me that he is still only saying less than 10 words and he is almost 3 years old. My son ( now 3) said more than that at 27 months old and I was told he had a 12 month expressive delay. By 32 months old he was speaking in full sentences that pretty much anyone could understand 60% of the time. There is most likely a very treatable issue behind his lack of speech.
